Abstract Employee exposure control techniques associated with petroleum refining operations were identified. A site visit was made to Getty Refining and Marketing Company's Delaware Refinery (SIC-2911) in Delaware City, Delaware. The exposure controls studied were at the oil water separation area around the waste water treatment facility and at the benzene (71432) and aromatics product loading facilities. Improved oil water separation facilities and a sour water stripper had been installed at the waste water facility. Hydrogen-sulfide (7783064) concentrations were about 1 part per million (ppm) compared to concentrations of 4 to 5 ppm before modifications were initiated. Concentrations of toluene (108883) and xylene (1330207) were minimal. Fugitive vapors were recovered via a carbon-dioxide eductor and a flexible hose attached to the tank truck. Long term personal and area sampling indicated that the OSHA permissible limit of 10 ppm was not exceeded for benzene, toluene, or xylene.
