Abstract Examples of good employee exposure control techniques associated with petroleum refining operations were identified. A site visit was made to Atlantic Richfield's Cherry Point Refinery (SIC-2911) near Ferndale, Washington on November 17, 1981. The exposure controls studied were the hydrogen-sulfide (H2S) monitoring system and preventive and routine maintenance procedures. Maintenance programs emphasized the control of fugitive emissions and prevention of equipment failures. Valves and flanges were monitored daily for leaks. An extensometer was used to monitor bolt tightening after repair or turnaround of heat exchanger heads. Vibration monitoring and equipment balancing/alignment programs minimized pump seal failure. Acoustic testing was used to inspect pressure vessel integrity while the vessel was still on stream.
