Abstract The mission of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to protect the health and safety of American workers by conducting research and applying the research results to prevent illness and control hazards in the workplace. The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 mandates research for solving work-related health problems, for developing innovative methods, techniques, and approaches to deal with these problems, and for exploring ways to discover latent diseases and to establish associations between these diseases and work conditions. NIOSH's strategies to carry out this mandate are organized into programs to: (1) identify occupational safety and health problems by detecting and defining epidemiologically significant changes and trends; (2) evaluate occupational safety and health problems and hazards so that their causes can be understood and the hazards prevented; (3) control occupational safety and health problems by developing, assessing, and improving measures to reduce hazards. These measures include engineering controls, personal protective equipment, and work practices; and (4) disseminate scientific findings and appropriate recommendations to appropriate agencies, organizations, and individuals.
