Abstract	You are involved in the handling, storage, and disposal of some of the millions of tons of hazardous wastes produced each year in the United States. You may also be involved in responding to hazardous substance emergencies. In the past, a large quantity of hazardous waste was stored or disposed of in an unsafe condition at unsafe locations. Many of these dump sites have been abandoned and present a potential danger to human health and/or the environment. Removal or treatment of the improperly stored or discarded waste with subsequent disposal at an approved site will help correct past problems.
