Abstract The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 includes a provision that only trained and authorized operators shall be permitted to operate a powered industrial truck. The law places the responsibility for operator training on the employer. Because there are many types of powered industrial trucks, and they are used in a great variety of circumstances, the regulations do not attempt to set out every element of an acceptable operator training program. This pamphlet is intended to assist the employer in developing a training program adequate to protect operators and bystanders, and sufficient to satisfy the OSHA regulations.
