National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Health and Safety Guide for Fabricated Structural Metal Products Industry.

PB83174722

Publication Date 1977
Page Count 110
Abstract In this industry, both physical hazards and health problems exist -- physical hazards when large, heavy sections are moved to various locations, and adverse health effects from (1) noise from welding, burning, chipping, riveting, and sawing; (2) exposure to lead particulate from the paint spraying operation; and (3) exposure to welding gases and metal fumes. Some of the fabricators also install their products; when employees do this work, they may be exposed to construction hazards and construction standards would apply (29 CFR, Part 1926). Cuts from the sharp edges of the metal and glass are the predominant hazard. Welding and spray painting operations may be a health hazard if proper procedures are not followed. Noise from the sawing and riveting operations may be a hazard. Often these plants are located in small, crowded buildings where the housekeeping is poor. Although companies in this classification may do their own extruding, extrusion operations are not covered in this Guide.
