Abstract Bis(chloromethyl)ether (BCME) formation from formaldehyde and chlorides is investigated both by studying its reaction mechanisms and by surveying selected industrial environments. Industrial facilities surveyed included textile finishing, fertilizer, and dye manufacturing plants; foundries; and a hospital resin production laboratory. No BCME was found within the detectable limit in any of the industries surveyed. The highest amounts of formaldehyde were found in foundry and dye manufacturing plants; the highest total chloride was found in a fertilizer plant.
