Abstract The purpose of the study was to investigate the economic impact of prospective changes in materials use in the U.S. motor vehicles, household furniture and appliances, beverage packaging, and highways and street construction industries under alternative scenarios. The impact of increased imports of automobiles and a changing recycling rate of nickel was also examined. Under assumed economic growth rates and structural changes in the U.S. economy, projections of output and consumption levels of selected industries and levels of non-fuel minerals to year 2000 were computed.
