Abstract Using data collected in the National Longitudinal Surveys of Work Experience, this paper looks at 1,390 white and black men who were ages 24-34 in 1976. All had worked as skilled craftsmen at some time since leaving school. The greatest wage benefits were found to be associated with a combination of types of training. The only single method of training which was shown to produce a strong and significant effect on subsequent wages was company training.
