Worker Exposure to Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons at Selected Petroleum Refinery Process Units, Standard Oil Company of Ohio, Toledo, Ohio.

PB83140285

Publication Date 1980
Page Count 49
Abstract Workers exposures to polyaromatic-hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined at the Standard Oil Company (SIC-2911) in Toledo, Ohio, on May 28 to 30, 1980. The facility employed approximately 560 employees. The company maintained a safety and industrial hygiene program. Medical services were provided by a facility nurse and workers trained in first aid. Personal and area air samples were collected in the fluid catalytic cracker unit (FCCU) and delayed coker unit and area samples only were taken in the asphalt blower unit. All 25 of the personal and area air samples had detectable quantities of at least seven PAHs or groups of PAHs. The cumulative PAH concentration ranged from 1.6 micrograms per cubic meter for one personal sample to 57.4 micrograms for one location in the FCCU. The two upwind boundary samples were 1.11 and 0.05 micrograms per cubic meter. The authors conclude that the workers at this facility are exposed to low concentrations of several PAHs.
