Abstract This study was performed under the sponsorship of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in accordance with the provisions of the Public Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970--under which NIOSH has responsibility for the development of criteria for standards relating to occupational exposures to chemical and physical agents. This study is one of a series relating to the substances which constitute the major occupational health hazards. In the words of the authorizing contract, 'The promulgation and enforcement of standards and regulations having legal status will require simultaneous issuance of specifications of measurement methods to be used to determine the extent of compliance. The selections of methods, therefore, represent decisions of considerable importance which NIOSH must be prepared to justify and defend'.
