National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Publication Date 1975
Personal Author Nelson, N.
Page Count 24
Abstract Research on the toxic and carcinogenic effects of chloro ethers is reviewed. Test procedures used to determine the carcinogenicity of 11 halo ether compounds are described, and the characteristics of the more carcinogenic compound bis(chloromethyl) ether (542881) (BCMS) and chloromethyl-methyl-ether (107302) (CMME) are discussed. Experiments in which several chloro ether compounds were tested for their mutagenicity in bacterial systems are described along with experiments on the respiratory carcinogenicity of BCME, and on the carcinogenic effects of subcutaneous and dermal administrations of CMME. The results of an industrywide epidemiological study of the effects of BCME and CMME also are summarized. The carcinogenic hazard of bis-2-chloroethyl ether (111444) and bis-2-chloroisopropyl ether (39638329) in water supplies is also discussed.
