This report characterizes Mouat, Transvaal, and synthetic chromites in raw, roasted, and leached conditions. Special handling techniques used in examining treated materials are discussed. Thermodynamic and kinetic analyses were performed on the oxidation of chromite. Preliminary chromium extraction results showing the beneficial effect of oxygen bubbling, stirring, and tumbling are discussed. In addition, the effect of time and temperature, particle size, charge size, additives, lattice and gangue materials, variation of sodium hydroxide-chromite ratio, magnetic separation, etc., are discussed. Preliminary solvent extraction and electrowinning studies were performed on a laboratory scale. These studies show the overall feasibility of producing chromium metal and recovering sodium. Extractions of chromium from laterites are also discussed. |
