National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Worker Exposure to Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons at Selected Petroleum Refinery Process Units, Coastal States Petrochemical Company Refinery, Corpus Christi, Texas.

PB82190018

Publication Date 1980
Page Count 49
Abstract Worker exposures to 23 individuals or groups of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and azo heterocyclic compounds were determined at Coastal States Petrochemical Company Refinery, Corpus Christi, Texas on December 13 and 14, 1979. Area samples were collected in the fluid catalytic cracker (FCC), delayed coker, and asphalt processing units using a silver membrane filter followed by Chromosorb 102. Personal samples were collected in the FCC and coker units only. An upwind sample was also taken at the refinery's northwest boundary. Samples were analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. All personal and area air samples analyzed had detectable quantities of at least 7 of the 23 PAHs (or groups of PAHs). Cumulative PAH concentrations for individual samples ranged from 0.6 to 136.8 micrograms per cubic meter (cu m). The upwind boundary sample was less than 0.1 microgram/cu m. Personal samples at the delayed coker unit generally were more than 4 times greater than those from the FCC unit. The 2 ring compounds were found in the highest concentrations. As the ring numbers increased the concentrations decreased. (No exposure standards were mentioned in the survey report).
