Abstract A NIOSH study of the long term mortality of steel workers is reviewed. Mortality data from 1953 to 1975 for Allegheny County coke oven workers (SIC-3312), Allegheny County steelworkers (SIC-3325), and non Allegheny County coke oven workers is provided along with overall mortality rates by work area. Tabulated data is presented for cause specific mortality rates at each facility, demograhic characteristics of the populations, and mortality rates by years of exposure. The authors conclude that 48 of 57 work areas examined are associated with excess mortality rates from respiratory cancers, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney cancer, digestive tract cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Further observations and analysis of this group of workers and continued maintenance and updates of the data are recommended.
