Page Count 11
Abstract Worker exposures to coal tar pitch volatiles in asphalt (8052424) and coal-tar (8007452) fumes were surveyed on November 9, 1979, among roofers employed by the Asbestos Roofing Company (SIC-1761) in San Diego, California. The survey was part of a NIOSH study of occupational health hazards in the roofing industry. Approximately five workers were involed in the roofing operations that were surveyed. Air samples and bulk samples were collected. Of the six personal samples taken, three exceeded the OSHA standard of 0.2 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/cu m) for benzene (71432) solubles during roof application. Five of the seven personal samples exceeded the OSHA standard for the benzene soluble fraction during roof tear up operations. Benzo(a)pyrene (50328) and benzanthracene (56553) were found in only one sample. The authors conclude that these exposures present a health risk for the workers. They recommend the development of engineering controls for roofing equipment, development and use of work hygienic practices, and employee training.
