Abstract Exposure to harmful emissions from an office recorder were investigated on July 16 and 17 in a Congressman's office (SIC-9160) in Washington, DC. The Congressman requested technical assistance for the evaluation. The office staff consisted of four females and two males who reported respiratory discomfort, eye irritation, and the presence of disagreeable odors. Air samples were collected from the locations near the operating recorder. The ventilation system was evaluated, and the personnel were interviewed. Ventilation around the equipment was inadequate. The odor was caused by approximately a 0.4 parts per million of n-butyl-methacrylate (97881). No carcinogens were identified and carbon-monoxide (630080) concentrations were stable. The author concludes that poor ventilation was responsible for the irritations reported by the office employees. They recommended relocation of the equipment and placement of a suitable health warning in the recorder paper supply boxes.
