Abstract |
Information on the synthesis, production, and use of ammonia (7664417) is reviewed. The importance of a catalyst in the process of uniting hydrogen and nitrogen to form ammonia, producers of ammonia between 1961 and 1974, their annual production capacity, the growth rate of the ammonia manufacturing industry and the consumption of ammonia in the form of fertilizers by agriculture are considered. Other uses of ammonia in acids and alkalis, cleaning agents, explosives, the food and beverage industries, leather manufacture, dissociated ammonia, metallurgy, petroleum refining, pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper manufacture, textiles, refrigeration, rubber, synthetic resins and water purification are reviewed. Estimates of the number of persons in the United States exposed to ammonia and potential ammonia exposures are given. The effects of ammonia exposure, its toxicity, carcinogenicity, syncarcinogenicity, and sampling procedures are discussed. |
