Abstract	Guidelines for safe work practices in the highway and street construction industry (SIC-1622) are presented. Hazards are identified and specific preventive measures are proposed. Regulations relating to walking and working surfaces, environmental control, noise, hazardous materials, personal protective equipment, asphalt paving, mobile asphalt units, concrete paving, mobile concrete mixing units and temporary heating devices are reviewed, along with regulations for heavy earthmoving and handling equipment, materials handling and storage, medical and first aid, fires, compressed air equipment, machine guarding, hand and portable powered tools, welding and cutting, explosives, traffic signs and signals and electrical devices. Record keeping procedures for accurate accident reports are described.
