Walk-Through Survey of Gulf Oil Refinery, Petro-Chemical Division, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Publication Date 1976
Personal Author Young, R.; Hartle, R.
Page Count 24
Abstract Worker exposure to benzene (71432) was surveyed at the Gulf Oil Refinery Petro-Chemical Division (SIC-2911) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 20, 1975. The facility was assessed for inclusion in a retrospective mortality study. The company provided medical, industrial hygiene and safety programs. Benzene concentrations ranged from less than 1 to 75 parts per million (ppm). Employees may have been exposed to concentrations of up to 20ppm benzene for short intervals, 2 to 3 times per shift in the quality control room. The company was aware of the high exposure concentrations and was installing a new ventilation system to improve conditions. Respiratory exposures to benzene, cumene (98828) and toluene (108883) vapors were potential safety and health hazards. The authors conclude that with a latency period of only 14 years and with only 22 workers employed in the benzene area, the usefulness of including this facility in the proposed study is doubtful.
