Abstract Worker exposures to sulfuric-acid (7664939) (H2SO4), stibine (7803523) (SbH3) and arsine (7784421) (AsH3) were surveyed at Standard Industries Incorporated (SIC-3692) (Reliable Battery Company) in San Antonio, Texas, on December 7, 1978. The facility was considered for inclusion in an in-depth industrial hygiene and epidemiological research survey of occupational exposure to sulfuric-acid mist. The company manufactured lead-acid batteries. Out of a total workforce of 275 employees, 43 male workers were occupationally exposed to H2SO4. Workers were assigned to one of three shifts. Files of active and terminated workers since 1975 were maintained. Personal sample records for lead exposure were kept. The company provided medical, industrial hygiene and safety programs. Protective equipment included uniforms, safety glasses, shoes and gloves. Concentrations of H2SO4, ranged from 0.03 to 0.04 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/cu m). Concentrations of AsH3 and SbH3 were 0.005 and 0.007mg/cu m, respectively. Worker exposures to H2SO4 mist prior to 1960 could not be determined because of lack of records. The author concludes that this facility is not suitable for the proposed survey.
