Abstract Guidelines for safe work practices in the commercial roofing industry (SIC-1761) are presented. Hazards are identified and specific preventive measures are proposed. High risk operations are identified and hazards relating to emissions of hot bitumen, tearoff operations, burns, organic solvent exposure, climatic extremes, lifting devices, perimeter guards, power lines, ladders, tankers and towing kettles, materials handling, and equipment cleaning are described. Considerations for worker training and provisions for medical and first aid care are also discussed. OSHA standards applicable to roofing practices are listed.
