Abstract	Worker exposures to airborne particulates generated during zeolite (1318021) mining were determined at the Union Carbide Corporation, Linde Division (SIC-1429) in Bowie, Arizona, on May 8, 1979. The mine was under consideration for inclusion in a NIOSH study of the health effects of occupation airborne zeolite exposure. Approximately 8 to 14 workers were assigned to the mining operations surveyed. Personnel records contained only job applications and social security numbers. Personal and area air samples were collected in the vicinity of mining activities. All samples analyzed for total and respirable quartz (14808607) and cristobalite (14464461) were below the analytical limit of detection of 0.03 milligrams. Microscopic examination of personal and area samples revealed only a small percentage of fibers longer than 5 micrometers with a length to diameter ratio of 3 to 1 or greater. The authors conclude that the miners are not exposed to fibrous zeolites and that this mining operation is inappropriate for inclusion in the NIOSH study due to the small number of miners, the insufficient latency period, and the lack of exposure to fibrous zeolite.
