Abstract |
Worker exposures to styrene (100425), ethyl benzene (100414) respirable silica (7631869) and benzene (71432) were surveyed on August 20 to 22, 1975, at Pomona Pipe Products Company (SIC-3547) in Greensboro, North Carolina. The company employed 85 workers. Personal and area air samples were collected. All samples were below OSHA standards of 100 parts per million for styrene, and unspecified limits for ethyl benzene and benzene. All personal samples for silica were below the OSHA standard of 10 milligrams per cubic meter divided by the percent of silicon dioxide plus 2, but some area samples exceeded the standard. The author recommends proper engineering controls, including ventilation, in the grinding, extruding and kiln unloading areas. If engineering controls cannot be installed, workers should be provided with respirators or should spend limited amounts of time in those areas. |
