National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract Occupational exposure to toluene (108883) was determined and the feasibility of a mortality and industrial hygiene study was evaluated at the Dr. Scholl Shoe Company (SIC-314) at Falmouth, Kentucky on December 14, 1978. This facility used toluene (108883) based adhesives, including neoprene (9010984) and urethane (51796) cements, and employed 435 workers. Threshold limit value sniffer measurements were taken near cementers and cleaners and at locations suspected of having high toluene concentrations. Concentrations ranged from 40 to 420 parts per million (ppm) and a background concentration was found almost everywhere. Concentrations of 240 to 600ppm of methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933) were found in the packing department and neoprene concentrations of 80 to 200ppm were found in the heel and arch lift departments. Samples of toluene concentrations collected on Draeger tubes were between 45 and 100ppm. Grab by samples ranged from 23 to 60 milligrams per cubic meter. The author concludes that concentrations of toluene and total hydrocarbons could be higher for 8 hour time weighted averages than those obtained through directly reading instruments and would indicate toluene concentrations at or below 100ppm. However, since this facility began manufacturing in 1970 it is doubtful if records could be obtained from the Cincinnati facility dating back to 1946 and hence it may not be feasible to include this facility in a cohort mortality study.
