Abstract Worker exposure to ethylene-dibromide (106934) (EDB) were determined at the DuPont Chambers Works facility (SIC-286) in Deepwater, New Jersey, from July 6 to 8, 1977. The survey was part of a NIOSH industry wide study of the health effects of occupational EDB exposure. The facility employed about 6,700 workers with 88 workers potentially exposed to EDB. The company had a formal safety and industrial hygiene program. Personnel records provided demographic information and department assignment records. The 8 hour time weighted average concentrations of EDB were determined from personal breathing zone. Median EDB exposures for the blend operator, reactor operator, compound bulk operator, laboratory technician, drum loader, raw materials handler, relief operator, and drum processing operator were 0.006, 0.002, 0.004, 0.0004, 0.014, 0.054, 0.004, and 0.026 parts per million (ppm), respectively. All exposures were well below the OSHA standard of 20ppm. The authors conclude that engineering and personal protection controls are adequate to maintain acceptable worker exposures to EDB.
