Abstract Worker exposures to antimony (7440360) (SB) were surveyed at Chemetron Corporation Inorganic Chemicals Division (SIC-3339). The location of the facility was not reported. The company was under consideration for inclusion in a retrospective mortality study to determine the carcinogenicity of SB. Chemetron employed 82 hourly employees, 48 salaried employees, and had an onsite medical facility and an active safety program. General area and personal air samples were analyzed for SB, arsenic (7440382) (As), nickel (7440020) (Ni), and sulfur-dioxide (7446095) (SO2). In the SB production area personal SB exposures ranged from 0.21 to 3.2 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/cu m), and general air samples ranged from 0.43 to 0.83mg/cu m, all of which exceeded the threshold value of 0.05mg/cu m. None of the As samples exceeded the OSHA standard of 0.5mg/cu m. No SO2 was detected. In the locker room and nickel-sulfate operation area, SB, Ni and arsenic concentrations were below OSHA legal standards of 0.5mg/cu m. The authors conclude that because workers at Chemetron are exposed to a variety of suspected carcinogens, this company should not be included in the proposed NIOSH study. Recommendations include improved ventilation and sampling methods and provision of protective devices and laundry services.
