Publication Date 1976
Personal Author Donaldson, H.
Page Count 18
Abstract Worker exposure to arsenic (7440382) and antimony (7440360) was determined at Texas Smelting and Refining, Division of National Lead Industries (SIC-3339), in Laredo, Texas on March 1 to 5, 1976. The company had full time medical, hygiene, and safety personnel. Employees were provided with respirators, hard hats, safety glasses, shoes, and baghouse workers were given coveralls. Air samples were collected by an industrial hygienist at irregular intervals. Breathing zone samples were collected by an industrial hygienist at irregular intervals. Breathing zone samples collected from 55 employees indicated that the mean concentrations of antimony and arsenic for all job classifications exceeded the current and recommended OSHA standards, respectively. The author concludes that this mill is an acceptable candidate for an antimony exposure epidemiological study. They recommend that the laboratory hoods operate continuously, the blacksmith shop hoods be redesigned, and the doubling furnace be better maintained.
