Abstract	On the basis of studies conducted by the National Bureau of Standards, technical provisions for the sloping and shoring of the banks of trenches and excavations are recommended. Included are a recommended standard practice for trenching which can be used by construction supervisors and compliance officers of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and proposed engineering guidelines for the design of shoring systems and other means to prevent mass movement of soil or rock in excavations.
