National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Validation of a Recommended Approach to Recirculation of Industrial Exhaust Air. Volume I. Spring Grinding, Chrome Plating, Dry Cleaning, Welding, and Vapor Degreasing Operations.

Abstract A recommended approach to the recirculation of industrial exhaust air was investigated for possible verification based on field studies. Exhaust systems in a spring grinding factory, two hard chrome factories, a dry cleaning establishment, a welding operation, and a degreasing facility were evaluated. Legal issues, energy consumption statistics for each industrial facility, contaminant classifications, air cleaner and monitor availabilities, process emission profiles, and ventilation system designs were considered. Predictive equations were devised for breathing zone and return air concentrations and failure analysis. The author concludes that the approach provides a framework for the design process, is aimed specifically at health and study issues and presumes availability of certain design data, and demonstrates useful and valid design procedures. A recirculating exhaust system should undergo frequent maintenance and inspection. Information is needed about the efficiency of air cleaning devices that are installed and operating under field use conditions. The development of a NIOSH recirculation system design criteria directed toward common industrial operations is recommended by the author.
