| Abstract |
An International Symposium: Safety in Manual Materials Handling was held at the State University of New York at Buffalo in July 1976. The report of this symposium presents a summary of current knowledge in the field of manual materials handling. The symposium was used to help prioritize future research of NIOSH with respect to similar research in other countries. Appropriate experts reviewed the information in this report which contains 24 papers beginning with an overview of the needs of NIOSH, continuing with a review of the subsystems of the body stressed in these tasks with numerical models of human performance and safety, factors that affect performance, and problems of research implementation. These are presented as chapters and the final chapter summarizes the results of three workshops. The report recommends, based on the symposium, that future safety standards include the weight, size, and position of the load handled, the frequency of handling loads that require preplacement testing of workers. It was concluded that research is needed to improve diagnosis, reporting and job description procedures, and that epidemiological studies are also needed. |
