Abstract |
The Secretary of the Interior, under the Alaska Native Land Claims Settlement Act, designated for study 19.2 million acres of land in and near the Western Brooks Range, Alaska. Under a Bureau of Mines contract, an Anchorage, Alaska, consulting firm in 1975-76 made a preliminary investigation of reported lode occurrences in the better known parts of the area. In some geologic units, the deposits examined (Red Dog, Omar, Frost, Kav) and their host environments are of types which, in Canada, have been developed into successful mines. Private industry reports major discoveries where these units extend into open-to-entry lands. Evaluation of the mineral potential of this area will require detailed regional mineral investigations followed by exploration of individual deposits. |
