National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Industrial Hygiene Survey Report. IMC, Sterlington, Louisiana.

PB278805

Publication Date 1977
Personal Author Brown, D.; Dobbin, R.
Page Count 16
Abstract An industrial hygiene survey was conducted by NIOSH at the IMC chemical production complex, Sterlington, Louisiana on May 19, 1977, to determine the feasibility of a health effects study of nitroparaffin workers. The plant, the workforce, nitroparaffin production processes and the safety, industrial hygiene, and medical program are described. Daily exposure of workers to 2-nitropropane appears to be about 1 ppm. The population exposed is too small and the length of time since onset of exposure is too short to conduct a retrospective cohort mortality study, pregnancy outcome study, or cross-sectional medical study. Straight chain aliphatic amines were detected in a bulk sample of nitroparaffin product. Since amines may combine with other nitrogen compounds to form carcinogenic nitroso compounds, further testing must be conducted.
