Abstract Enthalpies of formation of two amphibole asbestos minerals were determined by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The values obtained for formation from the elements at 298.15 K are minus 2,419.24 plus or minus 2.95 Kcal per mole for amosite, and minus 2,433.56 plus or minus 2.99 Kcal per mole for crocidolite. Tables of enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation are given as a function of temperature both from the elements and the component oxides for amosite and crocidolite. This report is in keeping with Bureau of Mines goals of minimizing undesirable environmental conflicts, impacts, and occupational hazards associated with mining and mineral processing operations, and in supplying basic information needed for public and private decisionmaking on mineral matters.
