Abstract In studies of thermal comfort it is normal practice to assess reaction by asking the respondents to rate their thermal sensation on a seven point category scale; the Bedford and ASHRAE scales are the most widely used. This paper investigates the behavior of these scales in detail. It is shown that the two scales are similar, and that they are in general not affected by immediately previous thermal experience, or by experimental manipulations such as room color or expectation. The variability in warmth votes given by one person on different occasions is as high as the variability of votes between different people. The standard deviation is about 0.8 scale intervals.
