National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Selected Silicate Minerals and Their Asbestiform Varieties, Mineralogical Definitions and Identification-Characterization.

Abstract This report recommends mineralogical definitions and identification-characterization concepts for selected silicate minerals and their asbestiform varieties. Precise definitions are essential because of the present lack of conformity in terminology among mineralogists, industrial hygienists, regulatory personnel, environmental scientists, and medical researchers. Because of the complexity and variability of crystal morphology in different mineral groups, the descriptive terms are explained by illustration rather than by numerical values. Applications and limitations of several analytical techniques for particulate identification and characterization are evaluated. (Color illustrations reproduced in black and white)
