Abstract This informative health and safety guide for foundries emphasizes management's responsibility and gives safety guidelines and the more frequently encountered violations. Topics include the health and safety program, safety training, machine guarding, housekeeping to prevent fires, general information for foundries (such as ventilation, administrative controls, personal protective equipment), potential hazards of various operations (sand preparation, coremaking, pattern making, molding, melting, pouring, shakeout, cleaning of castings and maintenance) and safety rules for operating power tools. Frequently violated regulations include walking and working surfaces (fixed and portable ladders, fixed industrial stairs, railings and toeboards), exits and exit markings, occupational health and environmental control, hazardous materials, personal protective equipment, sanitation, medical and first aid, fire protection, compressed air equipment, material handling and storage, machinery and machine guarding, hand and portable powered tools, welding, cutting and brazing, and the national electrical code.
