Abstract This report analyzes areas where alternative technologies should be developed to reduce energy required in the production of 14 high-volume commodities. Primary attention is given to aluminum, lime, cement, common brick, copper, glass, iron and steel slabs and castings, lead, nitrogen-ammonia, phosphorus-phosphoric acid, basic and fireclay refractories, sulfuric acid, and zinc.
