Abstract The objective of this study was to develop inspection and safety guidelines for hoisting at underground mines. The objective was achieved with a report that provides the hoisting practices and criteria pertaining to the inspection and safe operation of mine hoists consolidated from all available foreign and domestic practices that are applicable to American mines. The report has been made available to mine operators, to mine inspectors, and to others who may be interested in safe hoisting practices. The main value of the report is that it is the initial step in the development of hoisting regulations. It also identifies areas needing additional work and presents work scopes for initiating related programs.
