Abstract	Malachite green is used extensively in fish hatcheries as a fungicide on both eggs and fish, and is also effective against certain external protozoan and bacterial infections. It can be applied as an aqueous solution in tanks, troughs, raceways and ponds for fixed or extended treatment; used as a dip, or applied topically. At present, malachite green is not registered with the FDA for use on food fishes. Since it has been implicated as a mutagen, carcinogen and teratogen, safety will have to be domonstrated before registration is possible. This literature review was written as the first step in the drug clearance process.
