National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Technology in Retrospect and Critical Events in Science (TRACES). Volume 1.

PB234767

Publication Date 1968
Page Count 160
Abstract The report presents a systematic retrospective study of five innovations of major importance using key scientific events. The innovations studied include magnetic ferrites, the video tape recorder, oral contraceptives, the electron microscope, and matrix isolation. The scientific and technological background for each of the five innovations is illustrated by 'tracings'--historical charts of the major R and D events leading to the innovations. The key scientific events are analyzed in terms of being nonmission oriented research, mission oriented research, as well as development and application. Time lags from conception to demonstration are examined. The relative distribution of U.S. and foreign contributions is assessed. For all cases studied, nonmission research provided the origins from which science and technology could advance toward the innovations which lay ahead.
