Abstract	The textbook is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 is devoted to acoustic terminology, basic relationships of sound, outdoor sound transmission, and human response to noise. Chapter 2 presents noise data on automobiles and trucks, reviews the principal components of truck noise, and introduces a statistical descriptor of highway noise. Chapter 3 is concerned with instrumentation and techniques for making outdoor noise measurements. Chapter 4 is devoted to highway noise prediction. Chapter 5 discusses noise abatement treatments that are available for noise control, both at the highway and off the highway. Barrier designs are reviewed, and a new tool for evaluating acoustic barriers is presented.
