National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract The purpose of the investigation was to develop and demonstrate the feasibility of techniques to determine selected properties of respirable coal mine dust. An approved underground horizontal elutriator that samples air at 36 cfm was designed, fabricated, and used in this study to collect respirable coal mine dust in three mines representing the Pittsburgh, Lower Freeport, and Lower Kittanning coal seams. Analytical procedures for measurement of respirable dust sample particle size, density, random projected area, total surface area, and chemical composition are presented. Results of analyses of three samples collected in each mine are presented. No improvement in mining technology was expected or achieved. The methods that were developed for the characterization of particles are of doubtful value because of the large mass of dust required for the analyses. (Modified author abstract)
