Abstract The report describes a new carbonyl method for producing synthetic rutile from ilmenite concentrates. Reduced ilmenite is treated with pressurized carbon monoxide to convert the metallic iron to iron pentacarbonyl. The pentacarbonyl is removed, either as a liquid or vapor, leaving a synthetic rutile product. The iron pentacarbonyl can be decomposed to produce high-purity iron, and the carbon monoxide recycled.
