Abstract The location and production potential of large blocks of strippable coal reserves in North Dakota were determined by using published data as a base and adding new data contributed by companies owning or leasing coal lands. Deposits in 16 large blocks in North Dakota contain an estimated 4.1 billion tons of strippable lignite. The coal, lignite in rank, is in the Fort Union Formation of western North Dakota. Only lignite beds exceeding 5 feet in thickness, under less than 120 feet of overburden, and in large blocks of 5 million tons or more were included in the estimates. (Author)
