Pathophysiological Deficits in the Amygdala After Repeated Isoflurance Exposures.

Publication Date 2016

Abstract After surgery requiring general anesthesia, patients often experience emotional disturbances, but it is unclear if this is due to anesthetic exposure - which may last up to three months after a single surgical intervention or the cumulative effects of repeated exposure to a volatile general anesthetic on anxiety and depression remain unknown. We examined anesthesia exposure and anxiety- or depressive-like alterations as compared to sham control animals. We investigated long-term potentiation (LTP), whole-cell (WC) recordings of GABAergic spontaneous inhibitory post-synaptic currents (sIPSCs) of the basolateral nucleus of the amgydala (BLA), the open field test (OFT) and Porsolt force swim test (FST) in Sprague Dawley rats following a single and repeated isoflurane exposure. This study potentially gives the practicing clinician a better understanding the temporal emotional dysregulation following exposure to general anesthesia.
