Abstract The primary goal of the FDNY World Trade Center (WTC) Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program is to provide monitoring and treatment services to eligible FDNY first responders (firefighters and EMS workers). Over the course of the Program, FDNY provided over 86,800 medical monitoring exams and provided treatment services for over 9,700 members. Clinical experience from evaluating thousands of patients with a myriad of symptoms, findings and disease surveillance information obtained at FDNY WTC Monitoring visits enabled us to provide appropriate clinical referrals for specialized diagnostic tests and focused treatments for WTC-covered conditions. Information captured through visits was analyzed by the FDNY-WTC Data Coordinating Center (DCC) and refined by the FDNY-WTC Clinical Center of Excellence's (CCE) collective clinical experience to construct formalized treatment algorithms for upper and lower respiratory conditions, which formed the basis for the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene WTC Adult Treatment Guidelines. Through this medical education publication and our many peer-reviewed articles, the knowledge gained from operating the FDNY WTC Program was extended to other physicians. Disseminating our findings made it possible for similarly affected non-FDNY patients to receive state-of-the-art WTC evaluation and treatment. A secondary benefit was that the FDNY WTC Program developed clinical experience in providing screening, monitoring and treatment to victims of any mass disaster with exposure(s) that may result in health concerns.
