Abstract In this study, we examine the effectiveness of a registered nurse (RN) in a coordinating role, Primary Care Nurse Liaison (PCNL), for delivering preventive services. The traditional role of the ambulatory clinic nurse was redesigned to emphasize assessing health promotion/disease prevention needs using established assessment tools and U.S. Preventive Services Task Force guidelines (1996). The PCNL assessed health promotion/disease prevention needs using the HEAR and planned/documented age-specific interventions via the PPIP guidelines. These are in accordance with risk reduction protocols that spanned the networks boundaries to implement and evaluate needed health promotion/disease prevention services. It has been documented that nurses coordination activities influence outcomes in the acute care setting (Allred et al., 1995). Traditionally, the RN performs an adjunct role in the ambulatory care settings. A nursing assessment is not part of the care provided. This study places the PCNL at the point of entry of the soldier to the military health care system. A nursing assessment of prevention needs is done using DoD and U.S. Preventive Services Task Force guidelines.
