Abstract The purpose of this study was to explore characteristics of patients admitted to an acute care facility with a pressure ulcer and to determine whether the Braden Scale accurately identifies patients with pressure ulcers as at-risk for ulcer development. This study used a prospective cohort design. The sample was composed of adult medical, surgical, and critical care patients in a 460-bed acute care military facility. Subjects were enrolled in the study within 48 hours of hospital admission. After informed consent was obtained, a complete skin assessment, history, Braden scale, and vital signs were recorded and laboratory work was ordered. Skin assessment, Braden scale score, and vital signs were recorded weekly until discharge.
