Abstract |
Previous studies have shown that soldiers have concerns about barriers to diagnosis and treatment for their injuries which can result in incomplete recovery and delays in returning to full duty (Jennings, Loan, Heiner, Hemman, & Swanson, 2005). Consequently, the investigators wanted to test process changes and an intervention to facilitate injury recovery and improve soldier profile management. The magnitude of these alterations required developing an infrastructure prior to fully testing the intervention. This study was designed to create the infrastructure for improving the care coordination for active duty soldiers with musculoskeletal injuries. There were four features comprising the infrastructure: (a) developing a database to track and monitor soldiers on profile, (b) developing and implementing standardized practice guidelines for soldiers with musculoskeletal injuries, (c) examining the performance of instruments in a military population to measure dependent variables of interest, and (d) pilot testing an intervention using a nurse care coordinator to facilitate more efficient and effective delivery of care. |
